Descendants of Ann Duff Shirley of Virginia

Shirley

Generation #1

Ann Duff Shirley of Virginia

Ann was born in about 1670. Whether she was born in the Colonies or not is not known. She first appears in Middlesex Co VA as the wife of George Duff b. c. 1665, communicate at Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co VA. Reasonable conjecture leads to the belief that Ann and George immigrated to Virginia after their marriage c. 1690.

Ann and George's son, Abraham, was christened 12/15/1669 at Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co VA. And, Ann is next recorded in 2/1697 marrying Richard Shirley ch. 8/6/1669 St. Stephens Parrish, Northumberland Co VA. From this we deduce that George died before 2/1697 in Middlesex Co VA. As was most common in early Virginia, Ann immediately remarried.

Reportedly, Ann married John Williams on 2/17/1709 at Christ Church Parish Middlesex Co VA. However when Ann acquiesced to the sale of her dower right on 6/15/1715, she is cited as "wife of ye said Richard." If son Richard Shirley II was born in 1712, husband Richard Shirley did not die in 1708, and his wife Ann did not marry John Williams in 1709.

Ann's date and place of death is unknown.
