McPherson/Forgy Family Cemetery
Road 54, Laurens Co SC

Directions to McPherson/Forgy Family Cemetery:
From the town of Laurens, go towards Waterloo on HWY 221 to Cold Point. At Crenshaw’s country store--this is the local name to identify the location, and it is before the R.R. tracks on HWY 221--bear to the right. Follow Indian Mound Road until you come to the Mt. Pleasant Church, turn left. This will dead-end into a less used road resembling an old logging type road; it runs North to South. Look on the Right. The Cemetery is about a car length off the road. There are several large headstones which you should be able to see from the road.

This property was known as the McPherson Plantation (now called McPherson Tract) which was granted to Patrick Cunningham in the 1700's. E.G. Nelson bought 149 acres of the original tract. This smaller division was sold to Samuel R Todd and is now known as the Todd Tract. This property is now hunting land and is owned by Charles Stroop of Hendersonville, N.C. James McPherson died in 1850 in Laurens District, South Carolina, and his brother owned the rest of the McPherson property.

Noah and William McPherson were administrators in James McPherson's Estate. In his estate papers, there are 13 slaves listed. I believe these are the graves of some of his slaves in prior years before his estate sale. There were only two slaves sold, and the graves must be the slaves on the Plantation.

James McPherson married Rachel Forgy; William McPherson married Sarah Shirley; and the Shirley family of Shirley Town, the Forgy, Cannon, Moore, and Miller families were close together.
