Note: Information on the Taverner and Webb families is conjecture. To date there is no proof that the Taverner and Webb families intermarried. However, there was a familial relationship as proven by existing wills.

James Samford of England

James Samford was born 1624 in England. Proof of his date of birth comes from his 1700 deposition in Richmond County. In about 1650, John was wed to Mary Samford b. c. 1630.

James, Mary, and children immigrated to Rappahannock Co VA by 4/1662 when they are recorded in a land grant on Totuskey Creek (vic Indian Field VA). Estimating James' date of immigration as after 1650 places him in the Cavalier Class of immigrants--a class born to wealth and privilege.

James and Mary lived the remainder of their lives in what would become Richmond Co VA. On 9/27/1703, James wrote his will. He died sometime before 11/2/1704 when his will was probated in Richmond Co VA.

30th day of April 1661 James Samford sells 200 acres on the South side of Totoskey Creek to Michalell Hugh part of a grant to Coll. Moore Flunleroy.
4/1662 James SAMFORD was granted 736 acres, Rappahannock Co., VA, on the north side of Totuskey Creek.
1662 James SAMFORD and Mary his wife sold 200 acres, Rappahannock Co VA to Quintillian SHERMAN. Both James and Mary signed their names.
3/1666 James SAMFORD was granted 56 acres for the transportation of Margaret HELFORD and Susanna STEVENS. This grant adjoined that of Quintillian SHERMAN, Miles REILEY, Edward LEWIS, William BARBER, John WILLIAMS, Micajah HUGELL, William BASSETT, Margaret HELFORD and Philip LUDWELL.
1679 James SAMFORD, aged about 55, and Samuel SAMFORD witnessed a document in Rappahannock Co., VA for Roger BAGWELL's estate.
