Thomas Shirley was born 1621 in Wiston, Sussex County, England. Thomas is believed to be descendant of Sir Edward Shirley of Wiston House, Sussex, England. And as a descendant of a Knight of the Realm, Thomas would have been born to wealth and privilege. Thomas was a member of the vaunted Planter class who immigrated to the Colonies after the dying times to make their fortune in the New World.

Thomas and family immigrated to the Colonies by about 1650, eventually settling in St. Mary's Co MD. Thomas died 1697 in St. Mary's Co MD.
