Generation #2

James (1John) Minyard of Georgia

James Minyard was born 1768 in Cumberland Co NC. And in about 1793 in North Carolina, James married Hannah Sheffield b. c. 1773.

Nathan Smith, et. al., migrated in about 1795 from North Carolina to an area thought to be Franklin Co GA. The Cherokees complained that the Nathan Smith Settlement was on their land. Benjamin Hawkins, an Indian Agent, was sent to Georgia to determine who was right, the settlers or the Indians; and, he decided in favor of the Indians.

James Minyard was part of the “Nathan Smith Settlement” in Franklin Co GA and owned land along Mountain Creek. He was one of the signers of a letter to Governor James Jackson of GA dated 1798. Note, the Nathan Smith Settlement was located in the vicinity of Hollingsworth, Franklin (now Banks) Co GA.

Sometime before 1816 James and family migrated west to Marion Co MS. And, James is found enumerated in the 1816 Marion Co MS Census. Next, the family is found in a 1820 Lawrence Co MS land grant and the 1820 census. James is last found in the 1825 Lawrence Co MS Tax List.

James died in 1827 in Lawrence Co MS. And his wife evidently died before 4/1832. In the 1832 probate, the heirs sold the family property and split up with most of the children migrating to Carroll Co MS.
