Descendants of James Campbell of Ulster, Ireland

Generation #2

William Granville (1James) Campbell

William Granville Campbell was born 10/2/1799 in Edgefield Co SC (Old District 96). Oral history states that William and 6 of his brothers migrated from South Carolina to Alabama in about 1819. There is a Peter Campbell found in the 1818 Conecuh Co Tax list and four Campbells are listed as Head of Household in the 1820 Census. Evidently, William Granville resided in one of these Campbell households.

William Granville was married 6/25/1826, probably in Conecuh Co AL, to Elizabeth Mason b. 12/20/1806 Montgomery (now Emanuel) Co GA. William Granville is first found recorded in the 1830 Conecuh Co Census. This part of Conecuh County was later split off to form Escambia County in 1868. William Granville and family migrated up the Conecuh River to Covington Co AL before 1840.

As dutiful Sons of the South, five of William Granville's sons enlisted in the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. During this turbulent period, two stories appear which illuminate William Granville's character. In 1862 sons Charles and George "died of sickness" while stationed at Mobile. Upon hearing the news, William loaded up his wagon and rode to Mobile, returning with his son's bodies. Both sons are buried in the family cemetery. And sometime after son John's marriage (1860) and before William's death (1864), William arrived in Wayne Co MS unannounced, walking into son John's house without knocking and awakening a napping John. William Granville came to check on his property, his son.

William Granville and Elizabeth lived out their lives on the family farm in Covington County and are buried in the Campbell Family Cemetery on the family farm.

KINGFISHER DAILY FREE PRESS, Monday, March 15, 1915 - OBITUARY.
DIXON (CAMPBELL), Susanna
Miss Susanna CAMPBELL was born near Andalusia, in Coregton [Covington] County, Alabama, May 19th, 1833. Died in Kingfisher, Okla., March 13, 1915; age 81 years, 9 months and 24 days..
She was married to Ephraim DIXON in 1865. Of this union three sons were born; John B. of Lareda, Texas; William G., Baker, both of Kingfisher, Okla. This family is well known in Kingfisher.
Mother DIXON united with the Christian church when a young girl, and I am told was a great lover of the bible which she read much until her eyes failed to do her service. Then while the sons were away at their work, ladies of the church would go in and read to her from the most precious book much to her comfort and satisfaction. She had been a great sufferer, mentally as well as physically for quite a while. For months she was almost entirely helpless, having to be cared for almost as a babe. The devotion of her son William, with whom she lived was as tender and careful as that of a mother to a helpless babe, and is surely very touching and commendable. Some of these things will long remain in my mind and heart.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Methodist church, the pastor using as the basis of his remarks "Touched with a feeling of our infirmities." Heb. 4:15. Many sympathizing friends attending, and the floral offerings were beautiful. T. E. CARTER.
