Descendants of John Lee of England

Generation #5

Robeson Earl (4Samuel, 3Zachariah, 2Joshua, 1John) Lee of Wayne Co MS

Robeson "Rob" Lee of Wayne County, Mississippi, was born 4/6/1818 Wayne Co MS. [Although no factual evidence is available, a descendant of Eliza Lee adamantly states that Eliza and Robeson Lee were twins.] Family history states that Robeson was named for Robeson Co NC, his father's original home county. Rob's mother died shortly after his birth. Oral history states that he was raised by his older sister, Lucy, who married Braswell Overstreet.

Robeson is found enumerated in his father's home in the 1820 and 1830 Wayne Co MS Censuses. And, Robeson is believed to have resided with one of his older siblings after Sam married Martha "Patsy" Overstreet West.

In 1846, Robeson Lee married Catherine "Katie" West b. 8/11/1830 Wayne Co MS. When looking at a genealogy chart, immediately you realize that Katie was his stepsister. One might wonder what the arrangements were at the Lee home and whether brother had to marry sister. Tommie Lenora Campbell sets these questions to rest where she informs that Robeson left the homestead and lived with an older sister after Samuel's marriage to Martha "Patsy" in 1835. Robeson only returned to the Lee Farm after his father's departure for Texas. According to Grandma Tommie, only Robeson and some older sisters were left in Wayne County.

Katie probably traveled west with Martha "Patsy," only to return to Wayne County. Family history states that Martha "Patsy" did not return to the Lee Farm but filed claim on the property of a "fiddle-footer" (wanderer) who had also left for Texas. Did Katie go back to the family farm, find Robeson living there, and simply stay?

Robeson and Katie were married in January of 1846 in Wayne County. They lived there the remainder of their lives, raising 12 children of their own. Robeson was known for traveling the countryside with his male donkey, which was prized for siring good mules. Evidently, Robeson did a little siring of his own while he was out. Child #13 was delivered by his mother to Katie Lee at the Lee farm one day.

At age 43, Robeson enlisted in Co. H, 5th Mississippi Infantry during the Civil War, serving in the State of Mississippi. Robeson was captured and paroled at the fall of Vicksburg in 7/1863. After the war, Rob returned to the family home in Wayne County where he and Katie lived together for an additional 30 years.

Robeson died 9/25/1897 at the Lee Plantation in Wayne County. Katie died in 1910, also at the Lee Plantation in Wayne County. Both are buried in Old Lee Cemetery.
