Descendants of Thomas Mason
of Hanover Co VA

Generation #1

Thomas (0Dad) Mason of Halifax Co NC

The earliest known and proven ancestor was Thomas Mason, born in Hanover County, Virginia in 1722. Family history says that somehow we are tied to George Mason I who emigrated through Norfolk, Virginia in 1652. He was the great grandfather of George Mason IV, a revolutionary period statesman whose home, Gunston Hall is a preserved museum south of Washington DC, on land known as Mason's Neck. Because of the Civil War destruction of the courthouse in Virginia, especially Stafford and Hanover Counties which saw some of the fiercest battles, very few documents remain. For this reason it is extremely difficult to research early ancestors from this period of colonial America.
