Peter (¹Thomas) Mason of Georgia

According to The Georgians: Genealogies of Pioneer Settlers (Baltimore MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc, 1986), Peter Mason of Emanuel Co GA was the son of Thomas Mason of Halifax Co NC. However in this publication, only one Peter Mason b. 9/13/1751 is listed. Perhaps this was a misprint. There are references to another Peter Mason b. 9/13/1761, and this birth date corresponds to the many censuses where our Peter Mason is found.

Peter Mason of Emanuel Co GA was born 9/13/1761 in Halifax Co NC. His father received a land grant back in the 1740s, and this is where the Mason children were born.

Sometime about 1790, Peter migrated to Washington Co GA, probably in the company of his brother, Turner. And, Peter Mason was married in about 1791 in Washington Co GA to a woman named Rachael. Documentation for Peter in Georgia during this time is difficult; as there are no census records for the Washington/Montgomery/Emmanuel area until 1820.

A John Mason is found as Head of Household in the 1820 Conecuh Co AL Census. And, Peter Mason is enumerated in the 1820 Emmanuel Co GA Census. Did Peter's son John migrate first to Alabama with the rest of the family to follow later? Peter Mason is documented in 1824 in Conecuh (now Escambia) Co AL where he and son John received land grants. This places Peter and family in Conecuh Co AL before 6/1826 when daughter Elizabeth was married.

Peter Mason is found in the 1830 Conecuh Co AL Census. Peter is last found in the 1840 Conecuh Co AL Census. Reportedly, he died sometime thereafter. And he is buried in what is now Escambia Co AL.
