But in the 1930 Brooks Co TX census, Herbert Walter and his brother Arthur Emer are found down in the Rio Grande Valley side-by-side, listed as campers. In about 1938 in south Texas, Herbert Walter married Mildred Lucille Aitchison b. 10/19/1908 Cass Co MO. And in 1940, the family is found in Hidalgo Co TX.

While in south Texas, Mildred Lucille taught English to Mexican children, and Herbert Walter was an aspiring electrician. From family stories, we learn that becoming a certified electrician was arduous and the process consumed years of Herbert Walter's life.

At the outset of WWII, the family moved up to Beaumont where Herbert Walter worked in the burgeoning ship building industry. Herbert Walter died 3/9/1981 in Jefferson Co TX. He and Mildred Lucille are buried in Memory Gardens, Jefferson Co TX.
