The Burgess Family of Orange Co VA

The Burgess Family is important to this research; as they connect the Young family of Shenandoah/ Page Co VA to the Faulconer family of Culpeper and Spotsylvania counties. [Research]

Further research indicates that:
-Elizabeth Burgess married William Young and had issue. And,
-Nancy Burgess married Samuel Faulconer, Jr.

Moses Burgess, the father of this family, was born 12/2/1742 in King George Co VA. On 5/30/1862 in Stafford Co VA, Moses married Elizabeth Price b. 6/30/1741 King George Co VA. And, Moses and Elizabeth had five or six children. Unfortunately, Elizabeth died in about 1780.

In about 1784, Moses married Margaret Bennett b. c. 1760 in Virginia. And, Moses and Patsy had three children. Moses died 5/11/1796 in Orange Co VA.

Left Will dtd 5/11/1796 naming daughters Catherine Ellis Burgess, Milldred Lunsford Burgess and Lucy Burgess.

    5. Sarah Burgess

Peggy [Bennett Burgess] died in Orange Co VA, between Mar. of 1815 and 15 Mar. 1816 when the orphaned children of her step-daughter, Sarah Faulconer, were adopted [9/10/1815] by Samuel Faulconer, Jr.; by 1816 the Moses Burgess estate was dropped from the Orange Co tax lists, and the first settlement of the estate was made by Samuel Faulconer, Jr.

    6. Elizabeth Burgess

No records have been found to date which lists a daughter Elizabeth for this couple. However with a) a mother named Elizabeth and b) the descendants of the Young family born in Orange Co VA and c) the Moses Burgess family living in Orange Co VA, this is where she belongs.

We have found no record of William Young (1775 - 1855) prior to his marriage in 1801 to Elizabeth Burgess. The Orange County, Virginia census of 1785 (1795?) list as Head of household two person's with the surname Young. William Young as having five children and John Young as having four children.

Since the obituary of Nancy Young, a daughter of William and Elizabeth Young, states that Nancy's birth was in Orange County, Virginia, we believe that it is logical to assume with a relative degree of confidence that either William or John Young would have been the father of William Young, the husband of Elizabeth Burgess. William Young was born East of the Blue Ridge mountains.

Elizabeth is important to this research; as she is the wife of William Young who matches Lewis family yDNA.

    7. Catharine Ellis Burgess

There isn't a record for Catharine Burgess' marriage. However, she leaves a will for her "natural son,' Barnett Burgess Almond. Circumstantial evidence indicates that his father was Catharine's brother-in-law, William Almond. This appears to be a family trait.

    8. Mildred Lunsford Burgess

Did Mildred also have to elope? And, did she know her husband was the father of her sister's child?

    9. Lucy Burgess
