John (1John) Fairley, Sr. of Richmond Co NC
John Fairley was born 1763 in Argyllshire, Scotland. In 1770 John's family immigrated aboard the ship Edinburgh to Wilmington NC. Exactly why the family migrated is not known; but when they arrived in North Carolina, they settled among descendants of other Scottish immigrants.
Sometime before 1790 in Richmond Co NC, John married Katherine Fairley (possibly McCall) b. 1773 in Scotland. John is first found enumerated in the 1785 Richmond Co NC Tax List along with his father. John is next found in his father's home in the 1790 Richmond Co NC Census. John is not regularly found in tax or land records; as he lived with his father who was regularly documented.
Although no proof is found as yet, John's father most probably distributed a portion of his wealth to the other sons and daughters. With his father's death in 1798, John inherited his father's remaining lands and property.
In 1800 and 1810, John is found as head of household. Next, John is found in 1818 where he deeded to his brother, Alexander Fairley, 100 acres of land in Richmond County. Perhaps, this marks John's migration to Mississippi.
John is next found recorded in the 1820 Jackson Co MS Census. Living next door is Daniel Taylor who married Mary Fairly. Unfortunately, there is no documentation to prove that this John Fairley is Mary's father. This is inferred by combining oral history and their proximity in the 1820 Census.
With the change in county boundaries before 1830, John Fairley is found in Perry Co MS and Daniel Taylor is found in Greene Co MS. Proof that these are the same families comes from the almost exact match of family members enumerated in each separate census.
John lived the remainder of his life in Perry Co MS, outliving many of his children. John died in 1854, but his place of burial is not known.
