This analysis focuses on the 66/67 match to the John Lewis family of Caroline Co VA. [Research] There are few records for a possible lineage for this John Lewis; as the Lewis family attended St. Mary's Parish in Caroline county. And, those parish registers, including deeds and wills, no longer exist.
The best record for these descendants of the Lewis family is the 1746 record for Grandpa John Lewis, Boatwright. This John married Caroline Tankersley whose father operated the ferry across the Rappahannock to Dogue VA. Was John's father employed by Caroline's father? And later, did their children marry?
Lewis Records in Caroline Co VA: |
John Lewis was born in about 1775 in Caroline Co VA. John's fore-bearers were gifted 100 acres at the head of Taliaferro's Branch in what is now Caroline Co VA. And, locating this grant is important for finding where John grew up. The Lewis plantation was located on the Rappahannock River across from Dogue VA and adjacent to the Long family plantation and the Roy's tobacco warehouse, wharf and ferry, John would have grown up in the Long family circle and could have worked for the Tankersleys.
On 10/2/1805 in Caroline Co VA, John married Caroline Matilda Tankersley b. 1/4/1784 Caroline Co VA. Caroline Matilda was the daughter of George Tankersley, Sr., a prominent resident of Caroline Co VA.
By 1806 and after the death of George Tankersley, Sr., John and Caroline migrated to Washington Co VA with the rest of the Tankersley family. Unfortunately, Caroline died in 1811. In about 1816 in Washington Co VA, John married Sarah Lynch b. c. 1795 Washington Co VA. Sarah was the daughter of Edward Lynch. Edward was a stonecutter who immigrated from County Galway, Ireland, in 1785.
John and Sarah lived the remainder of the lives in southwest Virginia. John is last found living with son William in the 1860 Smyth Co VA Census. John died after 1860 in Smyth Co VA.
