James (1James) Lewis of Middlesex Co VA

James Lewis was born 1664 in Lancaster (now Middlesex) Co VA. And, the family attended Christ Church Parish of Middlesex Co VA.

In 1689 James married Joanna Kilbee b. 1668 Lancaster (now Middlesex) Co VA. James and Joanna lived the remainder of their lives on the family property on Sunderland Creek.

James died in 1720 and left a will naming four of his sons. Thomas who died young was omitted.

The Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex Co VA (1653-1812), p. 176:
James Lewis dyed May ye 10 & was buried May ye 12 1720.

Named wife Joanna, children James, [Thomas, dec'd not mentioned], Edmund, Zebulon, "Jasewa" (Joshua), with Jasewa and Zebulon being under 21.
Witness: John Sanders, George Wortham.
Inventory mentions money paid by John Jones, Mr. Vicarus, Mr. Thomas Read, and Capt. Digges.

1732. Know All Men by these presents that we Joshua Lewis, James Edmonson, Junr. and John Caragan are held and firmly bound to Wm. Daingerfield, Thos. Waring, Salvatore Muscoe, and Robert Brooke, gent. Justices of County Essex in sum of two hundred pounds sterling this xxist day of March MDCCXXXII [1732].
The condition of the above obligation is such that if the above bounded [brother] Joshua Lewis, Admr. with the will annexed of all the goods, chattels and credits of Edmund Lewis, decd. . . .

4/8/1741. Christopher Kilbee, Catharine Kilbee and Epar. Kilbee witnessed a deed from Joshua Lewis of Isle of Wight VA to James Lewis of Northampton NC for 400 acres in Northampton Co.
1748 21 May. Joshua Lewis of Isle of Wight VA to James Lewis of Northampton NC 400 acres NS of Mill Swamp adj. mouth of Grassy Swam, said land being a patent to Gabriel Parker 4 Aug 1741. Witnessed by Christopher Kilbee, Catherine Kilbee and Epar. Kilbee. Recorded May 1748 DB 1 p 337.
Northampton Co NC Wills:
Feb. 9, 1742. Christopher Kilbee made his will mentioning his wife, Katherine, his two sons, Epaphproditus and Christopher, his three daughters, Sarah, Elizabeth and Frances; his "friends" Joshua Lewis and John Fort.
Ex: Major Joseph Gray, and Thomas Jarrell. Wit: John Brassell and Thos. Wesbrock.
Probated in Northampton Co NC, at May Court, 1752.

    5. Zebulon Lewis

The Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex Co VA (1653-1812), p. 60:
Zebulun the Sone of James & Jone Lewis baptz 22th of Octob. 1699.
Isle of Wight Co VA Will Book 4, p. 215:
Zebulon Lewis's will was written Aug. 6, 1738, and proved in Isle of Wight County, Oct. 23, 1738. Wit: Christopher Kilbee.

Isle of Wight Co VA Will Book 4, p. 229:
4/23/1739. Zebulon Lewis estate appraised by John Brassell, John Fort, Christopher Foster. Signed. Jane Lewis.
