Generation #1

Johann Emanuel Waltmann of the Palatinate of the Rhine

Emanuel Waltman was born 6/19/1715 in Appenhoffen, Palatinate of the Rhine. In about 1749, Emanuel married Margaretha Beuerle b. 1729 Palatinate of the Rhine. Little of his life is known prior to his immigration to America in 1768. Emanuel's date and place of birth makes him a part of the greater migration pattern of Palatinate Immigration.

Research Notes:
-Emanuel was born in Appenhoffen. It would have been much smaller than a ville. It may have been even smaller than a dorf; as hoffen denotes a farmstead.
-From the records, we find that Appenhoffen was listed as part of the Commune de Landau, west of the Rhine. And, there are two Landaus.
-The Waltmans were from the Commune de Landau in extreme northern Alsace, modern day France. But in the 1700s, it would have been the Palatinate of the Rhine.
-Kreis Landau is located just north of the border in Sud Rheinland, Germany.

The first documentation for Emanuel is his immigration on 10/26/1768 to Philadelphia aboard the Crawford. The two sons are also listed. Note, a male over the age of 18 would have been recorded, but not necessarily the names of females or younger males.

From Philadelphia, Emanuel most probably traveled down the Great Wagon Road exiting the road at the Monocacy River and heading south to the Potomac. There they would have forded the river to the lands in Loudoun Co VA which were known as the German Settlement. Of note. Lovettsville would not be founded until 1820.

Emanuel and Margaretha lived the remainder of their lives in the German Settlement of Loudoun Co VA. Emanuel died 2/13/1784 in Loudoun Co VA and is believed to be buried at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church.
