Thomas (0Research) Wheeler, Sr. of Hardy Co (W) VA
Research Note: The 1880 Census for Licking Co OH lists Althea Wheeler's father's POB as Virginia. In the 1820 to 1850 timeframe, there were three different Wheeler families living in the area near Utica OH. One family came from New England, and a second family came from Pennsylvania. This is the third family which descends from Thomas Wheeler who died in Hardy Co (W) VA.
Thomas Wheeler was born in about 1735, probably in Charles Co MD. In about 1760, Thomas married an unknown spouse.
Sometime before 1763, Thomas migrated to Hampshire (now Hardy) Co (W) VA where he settled to raise his family. In 1746 Virginia blazed a new road from the coast over the Blue Ridge to Winchester in the Shenandoah Valley. And, the Wheeler family was part of a new migration stream from the Virginia Tidewater and Maryland to the Valley of Virginia. [Pioneer Road]
Thomas is first found enumerated in the rent rolls for South Manor, an approximately 55,000 acre manor owned by Lord Fairfax. And, Thomas settled on the family farm where the family grew to total eleven children. Unfortunately, his wife died sometime before 1800.
Thomas died 9/2/1800 in Hardy Co (W) VA. At the time of his death, Thomas is reported to have been living with common-law wife Jane Condell. Thomas's will named his eleven children.
