Sherod Cooper was born 1774 in South Carolina. His place of birth is set from the 1880 Madison Co AR Census. Sometime before 1798, Sherod migrated to North Carolina where he married an unknown spouse. Circumstantial evidence points to this first wife being a daughter of Francis Wilkinson.
Son Shadrack Cooper's will was probated in 1851 in Grundy Co MO. The probate record lists full brothers and sisters and two half-brothers named Branick and Isaac. As Branick was born in about 1803 and Isaac was born in 1809, these half-brothers were the sons of Sherod's first wife. And, the family name Brannock/Brannoc/Branick comes down through the Wilkinson family.
In about 1804, Sherod migrated to Knox Co KY, probably in the company of Brannoc and Thomas Wilkinson. Later, his first wife died. On 12/13/1809 in Knox Co KY, Sherod married Louisa "Luly" Wilkinson b. c. 1789 in Washington Co VA. But, their marriage was not to last.
Sherod Cooper was enumerated in the 1809 through 1812 Knox Co Tax Lists. And, Sherod and Luly were enumerated in the 1810 Knox Co KY Census. By 1815 the family migrated to Clay (now Owsley) Co KY where Sherod also appears in the tax lists until 1824. And, the family was enumerated in the 1820 Clay Co KY Census.
Sometime after 1824, Sherod abandoned his family and departed for Tennessee. On 10/3/1825 in Clay Co KY, Luly filed for divorce on the grounds of abandonment. And, the decree was granted on 10/24/1826. Nothing more is known of Sherod; as he is not found in the 1830 indexes for Tennessee.
