Generation #2

Abraham (1William) Crosthwait

Abraham Crosthwaite was born in 1725 in Philadelphia PA. The family migrated by 3/1733 to what was then Spotsylvania (now Orange) Co VA. Abraham grew up in his father's house which was an operational ordinary. And, Abraham would pursue that profession later in life.

In about 1763 in Orange Co VA, Abraham married Mary Taylor b. 1745 in Orange Co VA. Abraham and Mary migrated after 5/1772 to Washington Co VA

Abraham and Mary settled down and built their home on the Wilderness Road between Marion and Chilhowie in Washington Co VA. And, the location was highly strategic. Traveling up the slope of the Blue Ridge to Wytheville VA, the traveler would pass through a narrow gap and begin to descend into the Holston Valley. Located a days walk from the last town, this home became an ordinary which served travelers heading into Tennessee and Kentucky. Reportedly, Abraham had a sign in the form of a white cross with Cross written on the left and White written on the right.

Life on the frontier was perilous during the Revolution; as the British attempted to incite the Indians against the Colonials. In 1776, the Colonial Militia gathered at Chilhowie VA to suppress a Cherokee Indian uprising. And, Abraham is cited in the Calendar of Virginia State Papers as having provided provisions for the expedition.

In about 1790, the family migrated to Greene Co NC (now TN). Did Abraham migrate in the path of son-in-law John Slaughter? In 12/1801 Abraham wrote his will in which he specified $1 to each of his potential heirs. Reasonable conjecture leads to the belief that this deliberate act was intended to effectively disinherit everyone so to ensure the entire estate went to his wife, Sarah. Abraham died before 12/26/1801 in Greene Co TN
