Generation #5

Joseph Brannoc (4Brannoc, 3Francis, 2Samuel, 1Francis) Wilkinson of Missouri

Joseph Brannoc Wilkinson was born 11/16/1822 in Ray Co MO. He is believed to be named for his uncle, Rev. Joseph Hunter Ball, who married Phoebe Slaughter. Joseph probably worked at his father's mill in Livingston Co MO while growing up. But, Joseph left Missouri by 1847, the year before his father died.

In 1842-43 times were very hard upon the people of this county. Money was scarce and hard to obtain, and produce and wages were ridiculously low.

Hard times is an adequate explanation for Joseph leaving Livingston Co MO. But, how did he end up in Mississippi? An interesting theory has been proposed which links Joseph with the many companies of Missouri Militia which were raised for the Mexican-American War. Service in the war would account for his departure from Missouri; as he would have only been 24 at the outbreak of the war. And, the regiments were discharged at New Orleans in June 1847.

Why would Joseph migrate to southern Mississippi after the war? There is a belief that this Joseph Brannoc Wilkinson is somehow related to the Wilkinson family who settled Amite, Jefferson, and Wilkinson counties of Mississippi. That Wilkinson Family migrated from Rhode Island by way of Virginia and Georgia, arriving in Mississippi in about 1800. Did Joseph Brannoc settle in Mississippi in the vicinity of his distant cousins?

On 8/26/1847 Joseph married Rebecca Dunn b. 8/16/1828 in Mississippi. In the 1850 Franklin Co MS Census, Joseph's occupation is listed as school teacher. However with the coming of war, Joseph felt the urge to serve his country again. But this time, his country was the Confederacy. After the outbreak of the war, Joseph enlisted in Co A, 7th Mississippi Infantry, CSA. Fortunately, he survived the war.

Joseph and Rebecca lived their lives in Franklin Co MS, raising at least nine children. Joseph died 9/12/1905 in Franklin Co MS and is buried in the Roxie Cemetery.
