Wilkinson

Generation #4

Thomas (3Francis, 2Samuel, 1Francis) Wilkinson of North Carolina

Thomas Wilkinson is an example of the quintessential American pioneer. Born on the frontier of North Carolina, Thomas spent his life pushing ever west as new lands were opened for settlement. Thomas was born in about 1769 in North Carolina. Proof of Thomas' place of birth comes in part from son Henry who stated in the 1880 Dallas Co MO Census that his father and mother were born in North Carolina.

In 1781 Thomas migrated with his family to what was then Washington Co VA after the death of Grandfather Samuel. In about 1793 probably in Virginia, Thomas married an unknown spouse b. c. 1770 in North Carolina. Thomas probably lived with his mother, Rachael, after the death of Francis in 1798. Rachael is found recorded in the Russell Co VA Property Tax List from the Lower Dist. in 1798. From 1799 to 1802, brother Brannoc is recorded instead of Rachael. Had Thomas left for Kentucky by 1799? By 1803, the family disappears from records in Virginia.

By 1803 the family migrated through the Cumberland Gap to Knox (now Whitley) Co KY where brother Brannoc Wilkinson patented land on Meadow Creek north of the Cumberland River. In 1804 Thomas patented land on Flat Creek about 1/2 mile east of Brannoc. Thomas was enumerated in the 1810 Knox Co KY Census, age 25-44. Interestingly, there is a female in the household, aged over 45. Reasonable conjecture leads to the belief that this is Rachael Brannock Wilkinson, Thomas' mother.

Sometime prior to 1814, Thomas' first wife died. And in about 1814, probably in Knox Co KY, Thomas married Elizabeth Potter b. 1785 Russell Co VA. Elizabeth had been the wife of Mathias Wall Mackey and had at least two children. From the 1810 Knox Co KY Census, we discern that Elizabeth was no longer living with Mathias Wall; as he is found in his own household without wife or children. And, Elizabeth is probably one of the younger females in the home of Thomas Potter along with several younger children.

In 1814 Thomas and family migrated to Jackson Co TN where his brother Brannoc lived. Their migration route took them directly down the Cumberland River to Gainesboro TN. And Thomas, his new wife, and children from both of their families are found in the 1820 Census.

Thomas et al. migrated in about 1826 to Montgomery Co IL after the birth of son Joel. Their migration route would have taken them down the Cumberland River to its confluence with the Ohio, then up the Mississippi to the Kaskaskia River and then north into Shoal Creek. And, the family is found in the 1830 Montgomery Co IL Census

With the cession of lands by the Shawnee, Delaware and Peankashaw Tribes, lands in Southwest Missouri were opened in 1832 to settlement. Thus, the family migrated to Greene Co MO in 1833 where many of Thomas' children put down roots.

By 1848 Thomas and Elizabeth migrated one last time down to Boone and then Izard Co AR. Unfortunately, Thomas died in 1849. After Thomas' death, Elizabeth Potter Mackey Wilkinson is found in Greene Co MO, living with son Carroll Wilkinson and adjacent to sons Hugh, Joel, and Zachariah Wilkinson, and Gilbert Mackey.

Matthew McKey, Thomas Potter Sr., Thomas Wilkerson, who had land on Flat Creek [Permon, Knox Co KY].

Thomas Wilkerson appears in the land records of Knox Co KY where he was listed in the 1804 tax list.  He lived on Flat Creek.  He and Branak Wilkerson were listed in 1805, 1806 and 1807.

Thomas Wilkerson does not appear in Grantee index of Knox Co.  He appears to have received the 75 acres by an assignment of the entry by Aaron Freeman.
