Sophia (1Dad) Williamson of South Carolina

Sophia Williamson was born in about 1750 in South Carolina. In about 1768 in lands administered by Mecklenburg Co NC, Sophia married Thomas Case b. c. 1743 in Bladen Co NC. Having just married, Thomas obtained land on which to settle his new family. From the 1766 survey, we learn that Thomas settled near Fair Forrest Creek on lands which would become Union Co SC. Note, Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery is located at Cross Keys Hwy (Hwy 49) and Lower Fairforest Church Rd., Union Co, SC.

Unfortunately, nothing is known about Sophia and Thomas' life together. Thomas died before 1784 in what would become Union Co SC. The next record for the family is a 5/1785 Land Grant to Sophia Case in Old 96 District on waters of the Savannah River. Did the family move because of their previous support for the Crown? Or, did Sophia move back home after the death of her husband? That answer is unknown. However from this record, we learn that Sophia was a widow and that the family migrated to the new lands in Old 96 District.

Shortly thereafter, Sophia married John Turner. In the 1790 Pendleton Co SC Census, John and Sofia Turner are found in their own home, living next door to the Case family where her son Thomas is found as Head of Household, living with with his brothers and sisters.

A plat of 400 acres on both sides of Fairforest Creek was surveyed for Thomas Case Dec 12, 1766. adjacent to Robert Dugan's upper line. Thomas Case and John Williamson were chain bearers.
