Generation #3

Thomas (2Isaac, 1William) Case I of South Carolina

Thomas Case was born in about 1743 in Bladen Co NC. And, the administrative boundaries continued to change. From the 1754 survey, we learn that Thomas was a chain bearer for his father's land grant north of the Broad River on lands which would become York (now Cherokee) Co SC.

In about 1768 in lands administered by Mecklenburg Co NC, Thomas married Sofia Williamson b. c. 1750 in South Carolina. Having just married, Thomas obtained land on which to settle his new family. From the 1766 survey, we learn that Thomas settled just across the river near Fair Forrest Creek on lands which would become Union Co SC.

The outstanding question for all families in the South Carolina Upcountry at the time of the Revolution is "What side were they on? Tory or Whig?" From the previous record for Grandpa William Case, there is circumstantial evidence that this Case family supported the Crown. And after the American victories at King's Mountain and Cowpens (just up the Pacolet River from the Case property), many of the neighbors from the Fair Forrest Creek area evacuated to Charleston, abandoning their property.

Thomas died before 1784 in what would become Union Co SC. The next record for the family is a 5/1785 Land Grant to Sophia Case in Old 96 District on waters of the Savannah River. Did the family move because of their previous support for the Crown? That answer is unknown. However from this record, we learn that Sophia was a widow and that the family migrated to the new lands in Old 96 District.

Shortly thereafter, Sophia married John Turner. In the 1790 Pendleton Co SC Census, John and Sofia Turner are found living next door to the Case family. And, son Thomas is found as Head of Household along with his brothers and sisters.

On Apr. 25, 1754 a survey of 202 acres on the north side of the Broad River was made for John Oats, being the place where William Case now lives. Thomas Case and William Case were chain bearers for the surveyor.
A plat of 400 acres on both sides of Fairforest Creek was surveyed for Thomas Case Dec 12, 1766. adjacent to Robert Dugan's upper line. Thomas Case and John Williamson were chain bearers.
