According to family history, Dr. John West was born in Ireland in about 1775. And his place of birth is still under contention. In the 1880 Mississippi Census, daughter Catherine states that her father was born in Ireland. However, son Vinson states his father was born in North Carolina; son Stephen states his father was born in Mississippi; and sons John, Jr. and Daniel state their father was born in South Carolina.
Dr. John West was probably married for the first time before 1800 in Ireland. Family history states that he immigrated from Ireland with his family to South Carolina or Georgia in 1810. Unfortunately, his wife and an infant died during the voyage and were buried at sea. John reportedly married another woman named Rebecca b. c. 1780 in Georgia soon afterward.
A possible record for Dr. John West is found on 9/23/1810 where a "John West with his wife and four children" were granted a pass from Twiggs Co GA through the Creek Nation to Mississippi.
John and Rebecca are first found in Mississippi in the 1811 Wayne Co MS Tax List. And, we know that they were in Greene Co MS in 1814 when daughter Mary was born.
John and Rebecca are found enumerated in the 1820 Greene Co MS Census, but Rebecca died by 1823. In about 1823, John married Martha "Patsy" Overstreet b. 1808 in Georgia. And, the family is found in the 1830 Greene Co MS Census.
John was more than 30 years older than Martha "Patsy," and he died before 1835. Family history tells of Martha "Patsy" and her brood moving up to Wayne Co MS to live next to some of her brothers. Old Sam Lee, her notorious neighbor, "latched onto her"; and they were married in 1835 in Wayne Co MS.

On application and recommendation, ORDERED. --- that passports be prepared for the following person to travel through the Creek Nation of Indians, to-wit, one for John West with his wife and 4 children from the County of Twiggs: one for William Thomas Le Grand from the city of Philadelphia --Sir-- John West and Family is about to move to the Western Country of course he will have need of a passport I have been acquianted with him these ten or fifteen years past he has always supported the character of an honest Industris Good Citizen. I am you most obdt humble Servt - George Evans, 28th Sept. 1810. Reverse -Recommendation in favor of John West of Twiggs County for purpose of obtaining a passport to travel through the Creek Nation.
