Descendants of John "the Immigrant" Lewis
of Monmouthshire, Wales

Generation #4

Robert "of Belvoir" (3Councilor John, 2Maj. John, 1John) Lewis

Robert Lewis was the first child of John and Elizabeth born at Warner Hall. As soon as he reached the age of majority, Robert married Jane Meriwether b. 1706 New Kent Co VA. As Robert's and Jane's fathers were friends from back in New Kent county, we surmise the Lewis/ Meriwether marriage had been arranged in advance.

Son #1 John was to inherit Warner Hall. Son #2 Charles inherited 1/2 of Chemokins, the Lewis family plantation. So, Robert as Son #3 inherited the remaining half of Chemokins. And, Robert and Jane lived there when first married in the vicinity of brother Charles and father-in-law Nicholas Meriwether.

Beginning in 1734, Nicholas Meriwether received grants for huge sections of land in the unoccupied Piedmont area of Virginia which is now Albemarle county. And, Nicholas removed the Meriwether family including Robert and Jane to the new estates. Robert built his home "Belvoir" in the part of Albemarle county adjacent to Louisa county.
