The Zachary Lewis Family

Generation #2

Zachary (1Zachary I, 0Research) Lewis II of Fredericksburg VA

Zachary Lewis II was born 6/1/1702 in King and Queen Co VA. Of note, Zachary's family emigrated from Brecknockshire, Wales, to King and Queen Co VA in 1692. On 1/9/1725, probably in King and Queen Co VA, Zachary married Mary Waller b. 1/20/1799 in Virginia.

By 1728 Zachary migrated to Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co VA when he was listed as a vestryman of St. George's Parish. Zachary is next recorded in Spotsylvania County where he received land from Dunnill Abney, Jr. on December 13, 1730. Sometime during this period, Zachary studied law.

According to Caroline Co VA Court Orders of 1756, there was a "Deed of Gift from James Lewis to Zachary Lewis." This is the only reference which connects the Zachary Lewis Family of Fredericksburg with the Lewises of Caroline Co VA.

Zachary is cited having served as council to the vestries of St. Mark's Parish of Culpeper Co VA, as the King's Attorney, and as Spotsylvania County representative to the VA House of Burgesses. "The road known as 'the Lawyer road', to this day in Spotsylvania Co., took its name from the fact that Zachary and his son John rode it together so often in attending Orange Co. Courts."

Zachary died 1/20/1765 at his estate "Bel-Air" in Spotsylvania Co VA.
