Richard Shirley was born 1712 Northumberland Co VA. In about 1735, Richard married Mary Graham b. c. 1713 in Stafford Co VA.
Richard and Mary migrated about 1768 to what would become Laurens Co SC with the acquisition of a Royal land grant. Richard is known to have died before 1775; as his children and widow sold a portion of the land from the original land grant in 1775.
