Descendants of Michael Maloney
of Queen's County, Ireland

Queen's County (1556 - 1922) was a British administrative construct and renamed County Laois after creation of the Irish Free State.

County Laois

Generation #2: Brother of Michael Maloney

William (1Michael) Maloney

William Maloney was born 1816 in Mont Mellick, Queen's County (now County Laois), Ireland. In 1845 in Queen's County (now County Laois), Ireland, William married Margaret Horan b. 12/25/1817 in Ireland.

Mildred Shay b. 1918 wrote an unpublished history of her Shay family entitled "The Shays, From Ireland to Iowa." According to Mildred, the Shays, Maloneys, Easons, and Dowlings were all from Queens County (now County Laois) Ireland and probably interrelated back in Ireland:

Eight members of the old Maloney family came to America in May 1866, direct to Mt. Ayr, Iowa, by railroad to Eddyville, Iowa, then by the old stage line to Mt. Ayr, Iowa. It took two stages to haul the ten people and their luggage. [They came with John Dowling and his brother Joshua.]

Early History of Ringgold County, p. 123.

And, that interrelationship explains why a successful Irish family would immigrate to rural Iowa. Mildred's immigrant ancestor, Luke Shay b. 1824 and father of Michael Chancey Shay, was remarkably successful. He was the largest provider of commodities to the Chicago Mercantile from southern Iowa, shipping 150 carloads of livestock annually. In 1867, Luke assumed the contract to operate the stage between Eddyville IA and Nebraska City NE. Did Luke write to his Maloney cousins in Ireland, suggesting they migrate to Iowa?

William and Margaret farmed near Maloy and is first found in th 1870 Ringgold Co IA Census. William died 9/3/1877 and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ringgold Co IA.

Notably in the 1880 Ringgold Co IA Census, widow Margaret is listed as head of household and niece Ellen "Nell" is listed as niece/servant. She on to marry Edward Dennis Mullin of the local community and go on to be the ancestor of the Mullin family of Scott Co IA.
