Fry Research Notes

I. Research

Fry family research has been stymied by a dearth of records. As known, records for land transactions, birth and marriage and probate from Licking Co OH were lost due to a courthouse fire. Therefore, we must turn to any and all ancillary records including non-specific censuses and tombstones.

The first proven member of the Fry family of Newton TWP, Licking Co OH is Henry Fry b. 1812 in Ohio. And from the 1880 census, we learn that his parents were born in Virginia. Having failed to find historical references and/or records which precede Henry, this research resumes by looking at gravestones in the surrounding communities.

During the time in question, folks tended to be buried with their friends and relatives. These are the generations of Frys living in Licking Co OH.

II. Genealogy

From the previous records, we can build a purported family tree for the Peter Fry family of Licking Co OH:

Gen #1:

Peter Fry was born in about 1761 in Loudoun Co VA. In 1796 Peter married Sarah Jacobs.

Loudoun Co VA Marriages:
May 06 1786 Frye, John; Keeler, Susannah spinster???
Groom signed bond in German
Frye, Peter and Sarah Jacobs; Thomas Jacobs, bm 10 Dec 1796.
[Rev. John Littlejohn]
Evans, John and Mary Jacobs; m. 13 Dec 1796.
[Rev. John] Littlejohn

By 1812, the family migrated to Ohio but is not found until the 1830 Licking Co OH Census. Where was he in the intervening 18 years?

By 1830, Peter settled in Newton TWP near St. Louisville. By 1840, Peter is living in the adjacent Washington township, probably in Utica.

Peter and Sarah died in 1849 and both are buried along with other family members in Evans Cemetery in Newton Township near the family farm.

Marriages of Loudoun County, Virginia, 1757-1853, p. 52:
Fry, Peter & Sarah Jacobs. m. 10 Dec. 1796. [Rev. John] Littlejohn.
MB Dec 10 1796; Frye, Peter; Jacobs, Sarah spinster
Fry, Peter [b. 1759], died Dec. 27, 1849, aged 90yrs
Fry, Sarah [b. 1776], wife of Peter, died Jan. 8, 1849, aged 73yrs

Gen #2:

a. John Fry was born in about 1798 in Virginia. The first record for John is in 1824 in Shenandoah Co VA where he married Artemesia Booten. As with his purported father, Peter, John is not found again until the 1830 Licking Co OH Census.

John and Artemesia had several children who died young. Then, Artemesia died. From the cemetery records, we learn that John married next Sarah Ann (maybe) Beasley. After the 1844 death of son James, Johna and Sarah Ann disappear from records.

b. Henry Fry was born in 1812 in Ohio. The first record which could reference Henry is the 1830 Licking Co OH census for Newton TWP. So the same question applies. Where was Henry born and where did he live prior to 1812?

In 1836, Henry married Betty Bullock. Then in 1840, Henry is listed as head-of-household, also in Newton Township. And, his father is listed in Washington Township. Without records, there is no proof. But, I believe Henry inherited the family farm in Newton Township from his father. Henry died in 1899 and is buried with his wife's family in Evans Cemetery.

Fry, Henry  b. 1812 d. ???. 12, 1899
Fry, Elizabeth "Betty" Bullock b. Apr. 7, 1815 d. Jul. 10, 1897

c. Christena Fry was born in 1819. From the 1850 and 1860 censuses, we learn that Christena was born in Pennsylvania. In 1838 Christena married Nelson Matthias Jones. And, they lived on their farm in Burlington Township. A possible relationship can be argued because Christena is buried with Henry Fry in North Lawn Cemetery. After Christena's death, Nelson relocated to Piatt Co IL.

Jones, Christena Fry b. Jul. 20, 1820 d. Nov. 1, 1860

Gen #3:

William Fry was born 4/1847 in Licking Co OH. William first worked for his father on the farm. In 1870 he was working on his uncle David Bullock's farm. In about 1873, William married Sarah E. Evans. The young couple had two children, but Sarah died at age 23. Evidently, Sarah's death had a profound effect on William. He adopted out his infant son, Henry, and never owned property. William can be found in subsequent censuses living with his wife's parents and then his daughter. William is buried with his wife in Evans Cemetery.

Fry, William, b. 1847, d. 1903
Fry, Sarah Evans, died 7/29/1877, aged 23y 7m 5d

2. Jacob Fry of Greene Co PA, probable brother of Daniel Fry b. 1797.

4. Rev War Peter Fry

Peter Fry, who lived to be a centenarian, came to Jackson at an early period of its history. He was at St. Clair's defeat, and was forty years-old at that time. He remembered many of the important events that transpired during the exciting period of the Revolution, and had often seen General Washington. He settled on section seven, but did not succeed in acquiring much property.
