Descendants of Dad Jacobs of New Amsterdam

Jacobs

Generation #1

Dad Jacobs of New Amsterdam

Dad Jacobs was born in about 1605, probably in the Dutch Republic. His actual name is unknown and may not be knowable. The traditional patronymic naming scheme dictates that his first name would have been Jacob. But, what would have been his last name?

Place of origin for this family is confused. There are three possible sisters--Heyltje, Willemtje, Gretje--who are linked by baptismal records from Esopus (now Kingston, NY). From the 1679 marriage record for Willemtje Jacobs, researchers have reported that this family was from Gothenburg, Sweden.

1679 24 Dec; Jan Broersse Decker, wid Heiltie Jacobs, liv Marbletown;
Willemtie Jacobs, wid Jan Cornelisse, of Gottenburgh, liv Kingston.

Another interpretation is that Willemtje's deceased husband was from Sweden, but not necessarily Willemtje, as discovered in the 1668 record for Willemtje's previous marriage.

1668 11 May; Jan Cornelissen, of Gottenborgh, Sweden, jm;
Willemtie Jacobs, wid Albert Gerritsen.

If the three girls were sisters, the first documentation for them was the 1661 baptismal record from Esopus (now Kingston NY) where Heyltje Jacobs is listed as a sponsor. This would mark the family's immigration to Dutch America.

Another possible sibling is Pieter Jacobsen who appears in the 10/1662 baptismal record for son Pieter, Jr. along with Pieter, Sr.'s purported sister, Willemtje. Pieter, Sr. and Gretje Hendricks Westercamp were the parents of young Pieter. But, they never married. And, the issue was never settled by the court.

Date and place of death for the parents is also not known.
