Samuel (0Hannah) McConnell of Virginia
Samuel McConnell was born 1802 in Virginia. Sometime before 1830, Samuel migrated with his family from Virginia to Licking Co OH. His probable route would have gone up the Wagon Road to Winchester, northwest on the Pioneer Road to the Cumberland Road, then northwest to Zane's Trace, and the west to central Ohio.
Samuel is possibly found in the 1830 Licking Co OH Censuses where a Hannah McConnell is listed as Head of Household. The connection between Hannah and Samuel comes from Samuel naming one of his daughters Hannah.
In about 1830 probably in Ohio, Samuel married Dorcas McConnell b. 1810 in Ohio. From son Hiram's information in the 1880 census, we learn that the family was in Indiana in 1838. Where? To date, Samuel and Dorcas are not found in the 1840 Census. Perhaps, they were still in Indiana.
Samuel and Dorcas are found enumerated in their own home in the 1850 Licking Co OH Census. With them are their three children, including daughter Emily.
Samuel died 9/29/1872 in Licking Co OH. Dorcas' date of death is unknown. Both Samuel and Dorcas are buried in Porter Cemetery, Licking Co OH.

1/2/1890 Licking Co OH Legal Proceeding
The Newark Weekly Advocate, ARRESTED THURSDAY NIGHT Hiram McConnel, a saloon keeper of St. Louisville, swore out a warrant for the arrest of James Ritter and Charles Warthen, of the same place, for an assault with intent to kill. The affray took place in McConnel’s saloon in April 1888 for which a number of those implicated were arrested and fined. Warthen and Ritter fled when the officers went after them, Ritter going to kansas and Warthen to Western Ohio. The boys recently returned to their homes and McConnel immediately swore out the warrant, which when placed in the hands of officer Meredith, who assisted by Charles Valentine, returned with the prisoners Thursday. The trial will be postponed for a day or two until witnesses can be subpoenaed. |
