Generation #1

Edmond Brannock of Devonshire, England

In The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places, (Dublin: McGlashan & Gill, 1871), p. 248, the Gaelic word branog is another name for a raven. Origin of the name Brannock appears to be from the Brannock Islands which are the most western part of the Aran Islands of Galway Bay in Ireland. The Irish name is Oilean-da-bhranog or literally, Island of the Two Ravens. Located at the extreme western edge of Ireland, the Brannock Islands may not be the end of the world, but you can see it from there.

This particular Brannock Family is believed to have originated in Scotland. And this may be so; as many Celts from the British Isles were Irish from before the Romans. [Early Irish Migration] However, circumstantial evidence from allied families indicate that the family was from either Devonshire or Cornwall, England.

The progenitor of the Brannock Family, Edmund Brannock was born c. 1640, probably in Devonshire, England. In about 1665, Edmund married Jane Roche b. c. 1645 in England. An unproven story tells that Edmond, his new wife Jane, and Jane's family migrated en masse to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1666. However, Jane's father and brother migrated before 2/1663. Reasonable conjecture leads to the belief that Jane and Edmond followed her family shortly thereafter. And, Edmond patented land in 1666 in what would become Dorchester Co MD.

The Brannock Family lived their lives in what they thought was Maryland; as the family births, marriages, and wills along with land transactions and court proceedings were recorded in Dorchester Co MD. However after the 1775 Delaware/Maryland Boundary Survey, many Brannock Family land holdings were found to actually be in Kent Co DE. [1775 Boundary Map]

Edmond Brannock died 1/1703, probably in Dorchester MD. And, his will was probated 1/5/1703 in Sussex Co DE.
