The Lewis Families of Franklin Co KY

There are several different Lewis families who lived in Franklin Co KY. This is an attempt to identify the person who might have been the father of John Lewis, a cousin as proven by DNA.

1803 tax list of Shelby Co. KY with 1 white male 16-21. No land (near the Lewis men on Six Mile Creek on the tax list)

1. Henry Lewis of Franklin Co KY

Henry Lewis was born 1759 in Culpeper Co VA, On 12/11/1784 in Spotsylvania Co VA, Henry married Scytha Brown. And, Henry migrated before 1810 to Franklin Co KY. After exhaustive research, it is apparent that Henry did not have a son named John. That would have made connecting this family so much more simple.

Henry died before 5/1831 in Franklin Co KY.

LEWIS, HENRY,  May Court 1831:
Dec. 14, 1830 . Sons Charles and Henry; Nancy White; Permella Stout, Charles and Henry Lewis; wife (not named). Dau. Sally, Polly and Zachary Lewis, heirs one dollar each.

2. John "of Llangollen" Lewis of Franklin Co KY

John Lewis is a direct descendant of the Zachary Lewis family of Spotsylvania Co KY. John is highly documented in the 1894 Lewis Congress which was held at Bel Air Plantation in Spotsylvania Co VA.

John and family migrated to Franklin Co KY c. 1829 and the birth of son James Minor Lewis as cited in the 1850 Census.

August 15, 1858 - LEWIS, John - 75 year - male - Lawyer and Teacher - resident of Franklin County, KY - born Virginia - son of Zack [Col. Zachary] and Ann [Overton] Lewis - died Franklin County, KY - cause of death - Typhoid fever.

3. John Lewis s/o William Lewis & Elizabeth Ingram

John Lewis was born 1775 in Virginia. On 12/31/1798 in Woodford Co KY, John married his first cousin Nancy Claxton d/o Joshua Claxton and Tomesone Lewis. Although this is not the John Lewis we are looking for, this places another branch of the same family in the Franklin Co KY area at the same time.

4. Sons of Fielding Lewis of Caswell/ Person Co NC:

Fielding Lewis, who does not descend from Col. Fielding Lewis of Fredericksburg, was born c. 1745 in Virginia. He is first documented in 1778 in Caswell Co NC. He is important to this research; as three of his sons migrated to Franklin Co KY after his death. But, the question is, "When?"

After Fielding's 1801 probate, his heirs began selling the land inherited from their father. And from the many land records, we learn that at least three sons were in Franklin Co KY.

Person County Deed Book B, p. 75:
I March 1778. Charles Bostick sold 70 acres of land on Castle Creek in Caswell County to Fielding Lewis. In January 1795, Charles sold his 210 acres on Hendley (sic) Mill Creek to Mathew Daniel for £166. This land was on the waters of the South Hyco Creek and Derby Hendley's line.
Caswell Co NC Deed Bk 54, p. 298:
#547 dated 8/26/1778 to Fielding Lewis for 62 acres on Castle Ck.
Caswell Co., NC Probate:
1/25/1787. Elizabeth Lewis named administrix of Fielding Lewis deceased.
22 FEB 1787 in Caswell County. An estate sale by Joshua Coffee, Robert Dickens for Fielding Lewis.
Buyers: Nathan Scoggins, Capt. John Given, James Winfield, John Cummins, Stephen Austin, John H. Pryor, Elizabeth Lewis. 1/7 part allotted to widow.
9/17/1793. Elizabeth and Gabriel Gunn apply for the appointment of guardians of Susanna, John, Fielding and Zachariah Lewis, orphans of Fielding Lewis.
March 1801. Settlement of estate of Fielding Lewis. Legatees, James, John, Fielding, Zachariah Lewis and Gabriel Gunn.
424-425 Gabriel Gun to Aaron Haskins Halifax Co., Va. 191/2 a adj. Fielding Lewis said tract allotted James Lewis as Legatee of Fielding and by him conveyed to Gunn 6/20/1803. Signed G. A. Gunn.

    c. John Lewis of Caswell Co NC

According to the many censuses, John Lewis of Franklin Co KY was born about 1782 in North Carolina. However, in the 1870 Census we learn that he was born in Virginia. And from his tombstone, we learn that he was born in 1788. So, what's the answer? The earlier censuses are probably right.

After exhaustive research, we learn that there was only one John Lewis in Franklin Co KY as early as 1810. And, he is the documented son of Fielding Lewis of Caswell Co NC. Additionally, we learn that John's son, Lewis Walker Lewis, named one of his sons, Fielding C. Lewis, continuing the Fielding name in this family.
