Fielding Lewis (4Edmund, 3Joshua, 2James, 1James) Lewis of Caswell/ Person Co NC
Fielding Lewis, who does not descend from Col. Fielding Lewis of Fredericksburg, was born c. 1750, probably in Northampton Co NC. Fielding's purported father, Edmund Lewis, began selling land in Northampton Co NC in 1758 and is last found in records in 1760 at age 30. Where did the family go?
Sometime about 1770 probably in Orange Co NC, Fielding married Elizabeth Johnson b. c. 1750 Northampton Co NC. Cpt. Joseph Johnson, Elizabeth's father, was famous in their local area for having been a commander of the North Carolina Patriot Militia at the Battle of Camden in August 1780. Proof of marriage comes from Joseph Johnson's 1792 will where he names daughter Elizabeth Lewis.
Fielding is first documented in 1778 when he patented land on Castle Creek (vic. Woodsdale.) in Caswell (now Person) Co NC.
Fielding died 1/1787, and Elizabeth was named administrix of the estate. From the 2/1787 estate sale, we learn that Fielding and Elizabeth had six children. Of note, Elizabeth married Gabriel Gunn who was appointed guardian of four of the children.
By 1803 Fielding's heirs began selling land inherited from their father. And from the many land records, we learn that at least three sons eventually were in Franklin Co KY. According to the 1810 Franklin Co KY Census, there were five Lewis men. But, John is the only son of Fielding found in that census.
