1. Connecting John Lewis, Boatwright to the Tankersleys:

John Lewis was born c. 1725 Essex Co VA. And, from the 1746 record, we know he was a boatwright. And if not the actual ferryman, a boatwright would have been employed by the owners of the ferry.

Lewis Records in Caroline Co VA:
Jan 8,1746. Debit account of John Lewis, Boatwright. The Papers of Edward Dixon (1743-1747).

And, the purported son or grandson of John Lewis, Boatwright, also named John Lewis b. c. 1775 Caroline Co VA married Caroline Matilda Tankersley, the daughter of George Tankersley, Sr., whose family operated the ferry.

2. Connecting the Tankersleys to the Roys:

George Tankersley, Sr. was born in about 1726. And he married Dorothy Roy in 1767 in Caroline Co VA. The Roys are important because the original ferry was from the Roy's warehouse in Caroline across the Rappahannock to King George Co VA.

Roy's warehouse landing, in the county of Caroline, over the river, to Gibson's warehouse, in the said county of King George, the price for a man, four pence, and for an horse, four pence.

3. Connecting the Tankersleys to the Longs:

George Tankersley, Sr. who married Dorothy Roy was the son of George Tankersley b. c. 1680 in England. And, it was this George Tankersley who is cited as the operator of the ferry from Dogue VA to the Roy Warehouse.

In 1718 in Richmond (now King George in 1720) Co VA, George Tankersley was wed to Mary Long b. c. 1698. And, Mary was the cousin (1C1R) of Elizabeth Long who married James Lewis of Essex/Caroline Co VA and a progenitor of my branch of the family.

George Tankersley operated the ferry over Rappahannock River, succeeding William Taliaferro at The Mount, above present Rappahannock Academy in Caroline County. The ferry cross to land of Joseph Berry near Dogue Creek in King George County. Taliaferro had been a magistrate of Caroline in 1735. Tankersley was a vertryman (1723-57) of Hanover Parish, King George, and tobacco inspector at John Moore's tobacco warehouse opposite Port Royal. Tankersley's will was proved in King George in 1758.
