Generation #2

Daniel Ira (1Angus) Taylor

Reportedly, Daniel Ira Taylor was born on 1/1/1785 in Greenock, Scotland. From analysis of the many censuses, the year is relatively correct. The notation of Greenock as place of birth might originate from his port of departure when emigrating to America. This family was documented at South Knapdale Parish, Argyll, Scotland, although Daniel's date of birth has not been found.

Family oral history states that three Taylor brothers migrated from Scotland to America after the Revolutionary War. To date, only Daniel and his younger brother Malcolm are accounted for, both in Mississippi.

Of note, the Fairleys and McRaes immigrated from Argyll, Scotland, to the Carolinas. And, the Fairleys and McRaes migrated from North Carolina to rural southern Mississippi. One questions whether the Fairleys or McRaes were the cousins Daniel Ira and Malcolm were sent to live with in America.

Daniel Ira Taylor migrated to America before 1817, probably to the Carolinas and then migrated to Mississippi. In about 1819, Daniel married Mary Fairley b. 10/22/1794 Richmond Co NC. Proof for this marriage comes from a Taylor Family Bible which was in the possession of the descendants of Joseph Wetherbee and May Virginia Taylor Wetherbee.

Daniel and Mary are first found enumerated in the 1820 Jackson Co MS Census. Living next door to them is the John Fairley household, Mary's family.

For the next ten years, Daniel and Mary lived in close proximity to her family. With the change in county boundaries before 1830, Daniel is found in Greene Co MS and John Fairley is found in Perry Co MS. Proof that these are the same families comes from the almost exact match of family members enumerated in each separate census. Of note, Mary is last enumerated in the 1830 Census. She died sometime afterward.

The family migrated again to Wayne Co MS by 3/1840 when Daniel was a guest at Philadelphus Presbyterian Church. Daniel died 10/6/1849 in Wayne Co MS. In the 1850 Wayne Co MS Census, the younger children, including Jane, are found living together in the family home.
