Descendants of Michael Maloney
of Queen's County, Ireland

Queen's County (1556 - 1922) was a British administrative construct and renamed County Laois after creation of the Irish Free State.

Michael (1Michael) Maloney

Michael Maloney was born 1807 in Mountrath, Queen's County (now County Laois), Ireland. In about 1843, Michael married Catharine (possibly Haley) b. 1820 in Ireland. And, they settled down, having five children.

History of the Great Famine tells of deaths and privation from the famine. Beginning in the southeastern corner of Ireland, the blight crept north and west in stages and would not have hit County Laois until about 1846 or later. To survive the famine, Michael and family immigrated to America and are fist found in the 1850 Jennings Co IN Census. From children's dates and places of birth, we learn that the family immigrated to America in about 1852, probably to New York. Evidence for this immigration date comes from the 1860 Douglas Co IL Census where we find son Patrick, age 7, born in Indiana.

After immigration, Michael settled down to farm amongst his family and the Irish Catholic community in Jennings Co IN. Catharine died 11/19/1854 after daughter Julia's birth. Catharine's tombstone is found in St Patrick Cemetery, Scipio IN where Fr Daniel Maloney was pastor and is buried. Needing a mother for his children, on 11/4/1855 in Jennings Co IN, Michael wed Mary Ellen Mulick b. 1838 in County Roscommon, Ireland.

By 1859 the family migrated to Douglas Co IL where daughter Catherine was born. And by 1865, they migrated to Denison, Crawford Co IA. Michael and Mary farmed in the Irish Catholic settlement south of Denison.

Michael died in 5/6/1875 in Crawford Co IA and is buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery, Denison IA. After Michael's death, according to a descendant of Michael, the family "scattered off" leaving each child to make their way in the world. And, this is true.

By 1900 Mary Ellen migrated west to Council Bluffs IA in the company of son Andrew D and daughter Anna. By 1910 Mary Ellen was living with daughter Mary Ann Langmade. Mary died 3/16/1925 in Pottawattamie Co IA and is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Council Bluffs IA.

Note: This cemetery is located at the end of a farm road south of Denison IA.
The county has allowed the land to return to the natural high-grass prairie.

Michael Maloney's grave is the second grave found in the cemetery when entering from the northwest corner. In the photo above, the marker can barely be seen at the far right.
