Samuel (¹Samuel) Bullock of Virginia

Research Notes:

Bullock family research has been stymied by a dearth of records; as known records for land transactions, birth and marriage and probate records for Licking Co OH were lost in a courthouse fire. Therefore, we must turn to any and all ancillary records including non-specific censuses and tombstones. This research resumes by looking at gravestones in the surrounding communities. [Research Notes]

And, continuing research reveals:

• These families were part of a greater migration stream moving west over the Alleghenies to central Ohio after the American Revolution.

• Licking Co OH became a primary destination of pioneers heading west; first down Zanes Trace (1796) and later down the The National Road (1806).

• During the time in question, folks tended to be buried with their friends and relatives.

• Evans Cemetery is the cemetery for the original settlers of Newton TWP, Licking Co OH.

• Members of the pioneer generation of these families are buried in Evans Cemetery.

• And, there are four generations of Fry family members and their relations buried in Evans Cemetery.

Samuel Bullock was born 8/12/1773 in Virginia. In about 1812 in Shenandoah Co VA, Samuel married Nancy Carrier b. 4/4/1793 in Shenandoah Co VA. 

Samuel and family migrated to central Ohio sometime after 1815 but before 1820 when son Samuel was born. With this date of migration, Samuel and family would have been able to take well established roads west to Ohio. His probable route would have gone up the Wagon Road to Winchester, northwest on the Pioneer Road to the Cumberland Road, then northwest to Zane's Trace, and the west to central Ohio.

Samuel is first found in Licking Co OH in 9/1836 when daughter Betty was married. The family is also found in the 1840 Licking Co OH Census for Washington TWP. In the 1850 Licking Co OH Census, Samuel and Nancy are found living next door to daughter Elizabeth Fry.

Samuel died 5/13/1855 in Licking Co OH. In 1860, Nancy is found living with son David. In 1880, Nancy is found living with son Isaac. And, Nancy died 6/7/1880 in Licking Co OH.
