John (2John, 1Research)  Evans of Luzerne Co PA

Research Note: This Evans family is not the pioneer Evans family of John and Washington Evans who settled in Licking Co before 1800. This Evans family migrated from Pennsylvania c. 1828.

John Evans was born 3/22/1796 in Pennsylvania. In 1823 in Luzerne Co PA, John married Susannah Stout b. 1/23/1804 in Northampton Co PA. From the 1880 Licking Co OH Census, we learn that both of Susannah's parents were born in Pennsylvania.

Sometime after 3/1828 and the birth of son Nathan, John and family migrated to Licking Co OH. With this late date of migration, the route would have been fairly easy. Starting in central Pennsylvania, the family would have traveled south and west down to the intersection with the the Germantown Pike and the ferry at Harrisburg, crossing the river then west on Forbes Road toward Pittsburg then down Zane's Trace to central Ohio.

John is possibly enumerated in the 1830 Licking Co OH Census. And, the History of Licking County cites John as the founder of the Town of St. Louisville. We know that it was this John Evans from the history which links him with Wesley Coffman:

St. Louisville was laid out in 1839 by John Bell and Stephen Ritter. Subsequently additions were laid out by John Evans and Wesley Coffman. It early became a post town, superceding the post office at Newton Mills, half a mile below. . . .

"History of Licking County [OH]," Licking Co OH GenWeb Site, <http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Licking/LickingFile8.htm> 14 May 2007.

Evidence connecting this John Evans to son Nathan comes from the 1850 Licking Co OH Census where both John and Nathan are found in Newton TWP, listed as blacksmiths. And in the 1860 Licking Co OH Census, John's profession is still that of a blacksmith.

By 1870 John no longer lives in the family home. I wonder which child he left it to? In the census, John is found living with son-in-law Phillip Coffman and daughter Lydia. John died 7/28/1871 and is believed to be buried in Evans Cemetery, Licking Co OH.
