Wilkin

Generation #2

Johann Gottfried (1Rudolph) Wilkin of Philadelphia

Johann Gottfried Wilkin was born 1721 in Weiler, Duchy of Baden (Germany). Johann Gottfried immigrated to America with his family on 9/18/1727 aboard the William and Sarah, arriving at Philadelphia. And, family settled in the ethnic German Northern Liberties, north of Philadelphia Town and along the Delaware River. [Palatinate Immigration]

In about 1746 in Philadelphia Co PA, Johann Gottfried married Christina Emerich Nunnemacher b. c. 1725 Weyer, Palatinate of the Rhine. The first records for Gottfried are found at the Reformed churches of Philadelphia in the 1740s and 50s. Of note, on 5/5/1756, son Henry was Christened by Rev. John Conrad Steiner at the German  Reformed Church. And, John George Wilkin, brother of Johann Gottfried, was listed as sponsor.

By 9/1756 Johann Gottfried and family migrated down the Great Wagon Road to Frederick Co VA, receiving a Lord Fairfax Land Grant. Johann Gottfried and Christina lived their lives on lands which would become Shenandoah Co VA, raising at least seven children. [Wilkin Migration Map]

The last record for Gottfried's father, Rudolph, was in January 1760 where Rudolph's second wife, Anna Maria, is cited as "widow of Rudolph." In January of 1762, brothers Gottfried and George are found back in Philadelphia where they were both married on the same day. Brother George had remained in Philadelphia. Perhaps, brother Gottfried needed to return to Philadelphia to settle his father's estate. This was the second marriage for both brothers. From this record, we learn that Christina had died and Gottfried married Catharina Heller [Keller?] b. c. 1740.

Gottfried returned to the Shenandoah Valley with his new wife where they settled near Toms Brook. And, Gottfried had additional children with his new wife. Gottfried died 4/26/1785 in Shenandoah Co VA. And, son Matthias was his executor.
