Generation #3

William (2Thomas, 1Edmond) Brannock of Delaware

William Brannock was born c. 1719 Dorchester Co MD. One piece of evidence which connects this family to the Brannocks of Orange Co NC is the history of A. N. Brannock b. 1800 in Orange Co NC. Alexander Newton is believed to have been named for his paternal grandmother, Alice Newton, wife of William Brannock.

The Brannock Family lived their lives in what they thought was Maryland; as the family births, marriages, and wills along with land transactions and court proceedings were recorded in Dorchester Co MD. However after the 1775 Delaware/Maryland Boundary Survey, many Brannock Family land holdings were found to actually be in Kent Co DE. [1775 Boundary Map]

After the death of William's father in 1744, William would have had both monies and land. Were the lands that William would have inherited in Dorchester Co MD or Kent Co DE? Or, did William purchase lands in Kent Co DE on his own? Unfortunately, there are no records to prove either claim. However, William is first found documented in a 1743 Kent Co DE probate.

In about 1747 in Dorchester Co MD, Thomas married stepsister, Alice Newton b. c. 1723 Dorchester Co MD. The family lived in Murderkill Hundred of Kent Co DE until 1768 when records show they moved.

The last record for William is his will which was written in 1774. In the will he lists wife Alice and his residence in Mispillion Hundred. Evidently, the family scattered after William's death; as son William and daughter Rachael are later found in North Carolina.
