Generation #2

Stephen (1Nathan) Smith, Sr. of Georgia

Stephen Smith was born in about 1765 in Cumberland Co NC. His name has been recorded as both Zaline and Zopher. However for further reference, he will be simply known as Stephen. Stephen is believed to have served in the Spartan Regiment of Spartanburg Co SC sometime before the end of the Revolutionary War.

In about 1790 probably in Moore Co NC, Stephen married someone named Jemima b. c. 1775. Reportedly, she was Jemima Kees. But, this has yet to be proven. We know from looking at the 1820 Lawrence Co and the 1830 Franklin Co MS censuses that Jemima was born between 1775 and 1779. With date of birth for son Nathan as 1790, this makes Jemima a fifteen year-old bride.

Before 1795, Stephen and Jemima migrated with their extended family to what was then Franklin Co GA, establishing the Nathan Smith Settlement in the vicinity of Hollingsworth, Franklin (now Banks) Co GA.

In September 1798, Stephen signed the petition to the Governor of Georgia requesting relief from the boundary dispute with the Indians. Possibly because he knew this was a lost cause, he also purchased land on Hutson Creek in Franklin Co GA. We know of Stephen's departure from the settlement from Col. Wofford's 1804 list of inhabitants of the Nathan Smith Settlement where Stephen's name was annotated with an "R" indicating that he had removed/migrated by the time of the enumeration. By this time, Stephen and family were probably living on the Hutson Creek property.

Stephen's migration date to Mississippi is set by two events: 1) the 9/21/1811 sale of the Hutson Creek property in Franklin Co 2) on 10/16/1813 Stephen's daughter Polly married Wyatt Allgood in Marion Co MS.

This Smith Family is first found in the 1816 Lawrence Co MS Census. We find enumerated Stephen and ten children but no spouse. In the 1818 census, we find again a spouse of the appropriate age. In the 1820 Lawrence Co MS Census, we find Stephen with the oldest female born after 1775. But in the 1830 Lawrence Co MS Census, we find another female of the appropriate age. From these conflicting records, there are two possibilities, either Jemima died before 1816 and there was another female in the house between marriages, or Jemima lived past the 1830 Lawrence Co MS Census. However, neither account is proven.

On 5/18/1841 in Franklin Co MS, Stephen married Elizabeth Putnam b. c. 1800. There is an oral history which states Elizabeth married Stephen for his money and property. Therefore, Stephen sold off or gave away a considerable amount of property before the marriage.

Stephen lived the remainder of his life in Lawrence Co MS, dying in 1846. Stephen is buried at Friendship Baptist Church, Lawrence (now Lincoln) Co MS.
