Nathan (2Stephen, 1Nathan) Smith of Lawrence Co MS
Nathan Smith was born 1790 in Moore Co NC. And, Nathan is found living with his family in the 1790 Moore Co NC Census.
Before 1795, Nathan migrated with his father and grandfather to what was then Franklin Co GA, establishing the Nathan Smith Settlement in the vicinity of Hollingsworth, Franklin (now Banks) Co GA. On 11/24/1808 in Greene Co GA, Nathan married Nancy Evans Allen b. c. 1788 in Georgia with whom he had 5 children.
From Georgia, the family migrated to Marion Co MS. The arrival date in Mississippi for the refugees from the Nathan Smith Settlement is established from Nathan's sister Polly's marriage to Wyatt Allgood on 10/16/1813. The first time Nathan is found in the records of Mississippi is the 1816 Lawrence Co MS Census. But, Nancy died before 1/1821 Lawrence Co MS
On 1/18/1821 in the lands which were first Lawrence then Franklin then Lincoln county, Nathan married Elizabeth Jackson b. 9/24/1801 in Georgia. And, Nathan and Elizabeth lived on the family lands, raising his children plus their 12 children. But, Elizabeth Jackson died after the birth of son Nathan in 1842.
According to multiple sources, Miriam Putnam was the housekeeper at the time. After Elizabeth's death, Miriam became Nathan's mistress by whom his last two children were born. Reportedly, the children finally coerced the couple to marry. And lastly on 9/4/1847, Nathan married Miriam Putnam b. 1808 in Georgia.
Nathan died 10/3/1853 in Franklin Co MS. Miriam outlived him by several years. Nathan and Miriam are buried at Friendship Baptist Church in what is now Lincoln Co MS.
